Is There a Train from Bristol Airport to Southampton?

Bristol Airport (BRS) is the South West's busiest airport — easyJet, Ryanair, TUI, Jet2, KLM and Lufthansa all fly there. But getting from it down to Southampton is less obvious than most people expect, for one simple reason: there is no railway station at the airport. That single fact changes the maths for every other option. Here is the honest comparison.

The train (which starts with a bus)

There is no rail link at BRS itself. You first take the Airport Flyer bus into Bristol Temple Meads, which takes roughly 30 minutes. From there you can pick up a train towards Southampton Central on the Cardiff to Portsmouth line — around two hours.

On paper that is fine. In practice you are looking at 3 to 4 hours door to door once you add the wait for the bus, the wait for the train, and getting luggage on and off twice. And the train still leaves you at Southampton Central, about a mile from the cruise terminals — so there is a final taxi at the end.

The coach

National Express serves Bristol Airport, but there is no quick direct run to Southampton — expect a change and a long total journey. It is the cheapest option on paper and genuinely fine if you are travelling solo and light. With two large cases and a fixed departure time to make, it is a harder sell.

Driving or hiring a car

The drive is about 85 miles — the A38 north to the M5 at Gordano, then the A36 or A303 across and the M27 into Southampton. Typically 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes. The single-carriageway A36 stretch between Warminster and Salisbury is the main variable; lorry traffic at peak hours adds 15 to 20 minutes.

The catch is what happens at the other end. If you are catching a cruise, a hire car means dropping it somewhere and getting to the terminal anyway, or paying to leave your own car parked for the duration of the sailing.

The private transfer

A private transfer is the only option that goes door to door — from BRS arrivals straight to your address or your cruise terminal forecourt, where the porters take the cases. No bus, no change at Temple Meads, no final-mile taxi. Your driver tracks the inbound flight, so a delay does not cost you the booking.

We run this route both ways — see our Bristol Airport transfers page for the fixed prices, or Bristol Airport to Southampton cruise port if you are joining a ship.

If you are catching a cruise

This is where the airport's lack of a rail link matters most. Cruise check-in closes 60 to 90 minutes before sailing and does not wait for anybody, so the extra transfers on public transport are risk you do not need on embarkation day.

Allow a minimum of 4.5 to 5 hours from landing at Bristol to cruise check-in opening. For a 16:00 sailing, that means landing no later than about 10:30 to 11:00. If your inbound gets in later than that, fly in the day before and overnight instead — it is far cheaper than missing the ship.

Southampton has five cruise terminals and they are not in the same place: Ocean (SO14 3QN) and QEII (SO14 3GG) are in the Eastern Docks, while City (SO15 1HJ), Mayflower (SO15 1HQ) and Horizon (SO15 1AW) are in the Western Docks. Check which one your ship uses before you travel — see our Southampton cruise transfers for the full breakdown.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a train station at Bristol Airport?

No. Bristol Airport has no railway station. You take the Airport Flyer bus into Bristol Temple Meads first (roughly 30 minutes), then pick up a train towards Southampton — so any rail journey starts with a bus and a wait.

How long does Bristol Airport to Southampton take by car?

Around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes for the 85 miles, via the A38, M5 at Gordano, then the A36 or A303 and the M27. The single-carriageway A36 stretch between Warminster and Salisbury is the main variable.

Does the train go to the Southampton cruise terminals?

No. Trains arrive at Southampton Central, which is about a mile from the docks, so you still need a short taxi from the station forecourt to your terminal with all your luggage.

How much time should I allow if I am catching a cruise?

Allow at least 4.5 to 5 hours from landing at Bristol to cruise check-in opening. That covers immigration and baggage at the airport plus the two-hour drive, with a sensible buffer for the A36.

The bottom line

If you are on your own with a cabin bag and time to spare, the bus-and-train works. For everyone else — and especially anyone with cruise luggage or a ship to catch — the missing rail link at Bristol is what tips it. A door-to-door transfer removes the two weak points: the change at Temple Meads and that last mile from Southampton Central to the docks.
