Taking children to a cruise should be exciting, not a battle with luggage, parking and terminal queues. Southampton is very good at handling families, but the day runs far more smoothly when the car, child seats, pushchairs and check-in timing are planned before you leave home.
This guide covers the practical details parents usually care about: which terminal you are using, when to arrive, what to do with pushchairs, how much luggage to allow for, and when a dedicated Southampton cruise transfer is easier than parking or public transport.
For a booking page focused on seats and luggage, see our cruise transfers with child seats. If you are flying before or after the cruise, see airport transfers with child seats.
Start with the right terminal
Southampton has five cruise terminals:
- Ocean Cruise Terminal — Ocean Way, Southampton SO14 3QN
- City Cruise Terminal — Dock Gate 4, Western Docks, Southampton SO15 1HJ
- Mayflower Cruise Terminal — Western Docks, Southampton SO15 1HQ
- Horizon Cruise Terminal — Berth 102, West Bay Road, Southampton SO15 1AW
- QEII Cruise Terminal — Eastern Docks, Southampton SO14 3GG
They are not all next to each other. Ocean and QEII are in the Eastern Docks, while City, Mayflower and Horizon are in the Western Docks. Horizon is separate from QEII, so always check the terminal listed on your cruise documents rather than assuming from the cruise line alone.
If you are not sure which terminal your ship uses, our guide to which Southampton cruise terminal explains the usual patterns and postcodes.
Time the journey around children, not just the ship
Cruise check-in windows are usually staggered. With children, it is worth arriving comfortably inside your slot rather than very early. Too early can mean waiting around with bags, pushchairs and restless children. Too late can turn the journey into a rush.
A good family plan is:
- Aim to arrive 30 to 60 minutes before your assigned check-in window closes.
- Build in time for toilet stops or feeding breaks before reaching the port.
- Keep passports, boarding passes, medication and snacks in a small day bag.
- Confirm the terminal postcode before travel, especially if the ship has changed berth.
For a wider overview of timings, see our cruise embarkation day timeline.
Think carefully about pushchairs and luggage
Family cruise luggage grows quickly. Alongside suitcases, you may have a pushchair, foldable pram, baby bag, travel cot, car seat, hand luggage and toys for the journey. That can overwhelm a standard saloon even when the passenger count looks small.
For many families, the vehicle choice is the difference between a calm journey and a stressful repack on the driveway:
- Estate — best for a family of three or four with a pushchair and several cases.
- MPV — best for larger families, grandparents joining, or full cruise luggage.
- Two vehicles — sometimes better for very large family groups with heavy luggage.
Our Mercedes V-Class MPV is the usual choice when families want everyone together in one vehicle with room for cases and children.
Child seats and boosters
If you need child seats, arrange them before the day of travel. Give the child's age, weight and height when booking so the operator can prepare the right option. Parents who prefer their own familiar seat can bring it, but the vehicle still needs to be sized with that seat and luggage in mind.
viaUNO can provide child seats and boosters on pre-booked family cruise transfers. The dedicated cruise transfers with child seats page explains the seat types available and what details to send before travel.
Embarkation day with children
At the terminal, the goal is simple: get bags to the porters, keep documents close and avoid unnecessary walking. A pre-booked transfer can drop you close to the terminal forecourt, where porters handle the large cases and you keep the day bag with you.
Before leaving home, check:
- Passports and cruise documents are in one easy-to-reach bag.
- Medicines, snacks, baby supplies and chargers are not packed in checked cases.
- The pushchair can fold if terminal staff ask for it.
- The driver has the correct terminal, ship name and check-in window.
- Child seats and vehicle size have been confirmed.
Disembarkation with tired children
Coming home can be harder than going out. Children are tired, cases are heavier, and everyone wants to get moving. For disembarkation, pre-booked transport is useful because the pickup can be matched to your expected release window rather than the ship's docking time alone.
If your ship docks late, a professional cruise transfer should adjust for that. viaUNO monitors cruise arrivals and can meet families at the terminal exit with a name board, then take you directly to Heathrow, Gatwick, a Southampton hotel, the rail station or home.
Flying before or after your cruise
Many families fly into Heathrow or Gatwick before sailing from Southampton, or travel from the cruise terminal back to an airport after disembarkation. That is where child seats, flight monitoring and ship monitoring matter together.

Frequently asked questions
Can I book a child seat for a Southampton cruise transfer?
Yes. Request child seats when booking and provide each child's age, weight and height so the correct seat can be prepared.
Which Southampton cruise terminals are most family-friendly?
All five terminals can handle families, but the best plan depends on your ship, check-in window, luggage and whether you need pushchair or child-seat space.
Can I take a pushchair to the cruise terminal?
Yes. Pushchairs and foldable prams are common at Southampton cruise terminals. Tell your transfer provider so the vehicle has enough boot space.
Should families book an estate or MPV for cruise luggage?
An estate usually suits smaller families with extra bags. An MPV is better for larger families, grandparents travelling together or full cruise luggage.
