One of Southampton's largest private-sector employers, on the waterfront next to the City Cruise Terminal. Easy to reach and central.
About 5 minutes from Southampton Central, 20 from Southampton Airport.
Ordnance Survey
Explorer House, Adanac Drive, SO16 0AS
Headquartered in Southampton since 1841, with over 1,200 people at the Explorer House campus near Adanac Park in Nursling, off Junction 3 of the M271.
This is the one visitors most often underestimate. It is well connected by road and poorly connected by bus — there is no direct service from the city centre, and it is not a walk from anywhere.
About 15 minutes from Southampton Central, 20 from Southampton Airport.
Port of Southampton — Associated British Ports
Herbert Walker Avenue, SO15 0HH
ABP runs one of Europe's busiest ports, spread across the Eastern and Western Docks. Staff, contractors, shipping agents and maritime visitors all need port-side access, often at shift-change hours.
Two things matter here: the site is large enough that "the port" is not a destination — name the dock gate or berth — and early shifts start well before the buses do.

University Hospital Southampton
Tremona Road, SO16 6YD
One of the South's largest acute teaching hospitals, employing more than 13,000 people. A constant destination for clinical staff, visiting consultants and contractors, including nights and weekends when public transport thins out badly.

A Russell Group university across several sites — Highfield, the Boldrewood Innovation Campus on the waterfront, and Southampton Science Park at Chilworth. Between them they draw visiting academics, conference delegates and partner organisations year-round.
Southampton Science Park at Chilworth is the second site that catches people out — it sits off the A27 north of the city with no direct city-centre service.

Name the building, not the company. Large campuses have multiple entrances and gatehouses. "Explorer House, Adanac Drive" beats "Ordnance Survey"; a dock gate beats "the port".
