Sustainability
Last updated: 2026-04-23
We know that every mile we drive has an environmental and social cost. viaUNO Cars is a Southampton-based private hire operator, not a global business — our sustainability commitments are practical and local. This page sets out what we are doing today and what we are working towards.
Our environmental commitments
- Cleaner fleet: our drivers operate newer Euro 6 diesel and petrol vehicles that meet current UK low-emission standards. Where possible we work with drivers who run hybrid and fully electric vehicles.
- Efficient routing: we plan journeys using live traffic data and avoid unnecessary empty mileage. This reduces fuel consumption and keeps prices fair for our customers.
- No-idle policy: drivers are asked to switch off their engine when waiting at terminals or pickup points wherever safe to do so.
- Shared rides where they make sense: our 8-seater MPV service is deliberately priced to make group travel cheaper than multiple single journeys, cutting emissions for families and tour groups.
What we are working towards
We do not pretend to be carbon-neutral. Progress in private hire depends on the availability, cost and charging infrastructure for low-emission vehicles. Our realistic medium-term goals:
- Grow the share of hybrid and fully electric vehicles in our active fleet each year.
- Prefer drivers running lower-emission vehicles for eligible bookings.
- Work with Southampton City Council and local charging partners as charging availability in and around Southampton improves.
- Review our office and backend infrastructure to reduce unnecessary energy use.
Driver welfare
Drivers are the heart of what we do. A sustainable business is only sustainable if the people delivering it are treated fairly:
- Transparent fare splits with no hidden platform fees deducted from drivers.
- Freedom to accept or decline bookings, and to work for other operators.
- Reasonable working hours, with rostering designed to avoid driver fatigue.
- Access to support for mental health, stress and wellbeing through local services.
- Clear channels for drivers to raise concerns about pay, safety or exploitation — see our modern slavery statement.
Accessibility and inclusion
Sustainability also means ensuring our service is open to everyone. We accommodate assistance dogs, folding wheelchairs and mobility aids at no extra cost, and our website follows WCAG 2.1 AA standards to the best of our ability — see our accessibility statement.
Community
As a local Southampton operator, we value being part of the community we serve. Where we can, we support local initiatives such as community transport requests for elderly residents, partnerships with cruise terminals and airport operators, and placements for local apprentice drivers learning the trade.
Governance
We take compliance seriously and hold current private hire operator licensing with our local authority. Our governance principles:
- Anti-bribery, anti-corruption and zero tolerance for discrimination.
- GDPR-compliant data handling for passengers and drivers.
- Published complaints procedure — see our complaints page.
- Annual review of this sustainability page to reflect real progress.
Feedback
Sustainability is a journey, not a finish line. If you have ideas, questions, or concerns about how we operate, please contact us at support@viauno.co.uk or via our contact page.
