Picking a hotel for the night before a cruise is less about finding the nearest building to the port and more about matching the hotel to your journey: how you are arriving, how much luggage you have, if you are bringing a car, and which terminal your ship is using.
This guide compares 10 Southampton hotels on those terms. Facilities and parking details were checked on each hotel's official website in October 2026. They change, so confirm anything important with the hotel before you book.
Quick answer
Southampton has five cruise terminals, not one, spread across the Eastern and Western Docks, so the best hotel depends partly on where your ship sails from. For most passengers, the city centre around West Quay is the most practical all-round base. Ocean Village is the stronger choice for a waterfront or premium stay. The hotels near Southampton Central station make sense if you are arriving by train. If you are driving, parking arrangements usually matter more than walking distance.
Best hotel by situation
- Overall convenience: Leonardo Royal Hotel Southampton Grand Harbour, a waterfront hotel on West Quay Road with on-site parking and a listed cruise parking package.

Hotel parking is not the same as cruise parking
A hotel car park for overnight guests does not automatically mean you can leave your car there for a week or two while you are at sea. Cruise-length parking usually needs a specific package or rate, often booked with the room, and the number of nights covered, the car park used and the conditions can change. Before you book a hotel because of its parking, confirm with the hotel exactly how long your car can stay and on what terms.
Best areas to stay before a Southampton cruise
West Quay, Old Town and the city centre
The most practical all-round base. The WestQuay shopping centre and the surrounding streets give you plenty of restaurants for the night before, and Southampton Central station is within reach. Several hotels sit close to the Western Docks, which is useful if your ship is at City, Mayflower or Horizon Cruise Terminal. Parking varies hotel by hotel, from on-site car parks to public multi-storeys next door. This area suits most passengers, especially anyone who wants dinner nearby and a short run to the ship in the morning.
Ocean Village and the waterfront
Ocean Village is a marina district with waterfront bars and restaurants, and it sits on the Eastern Docks side of the city, the same side as Ocean and QEII Cruise Terminals. It is the better choice for a premium or celebratory stay. It is further from the station than the West Quay hotels, so rail arrivals usually need a car or taxi to reach it with luggage.
Southampton Central and the station side
Novotel and ibis share a stretch of West Quay Road close to Southampton Central. For travellers arriving by train with heavy cases, a short walk from the platform to the hotel is a real advantage, and the city centre is still close for dinner. You will still want a vehicle transfer to the terminal on embarkation morning.
Slightly outside the centre
Hotels outside the city, such as the Hilton at the Utilita Bowl, appeal to drivers who prefer easy road access and on-site parking over a central location. The trade-off is that you need a vehicle for everything, including the run to the docks, and you lose the choice of restaurants on the doorstep.
Which Southampton cruise terminal are you sailing from?
Southampton has five working cruise terminals: Ocean Cruise Terminal and QEII Cruise Terminal in the Eastern Docks, and City Cruise Terminal, Mayflower Cruise Terminal and Horizon Cruise Terminal in the Western Docks. A hotel that is handy for one terminal can be a less convenient start for another, so it is worth checking yours before you choose where to stay.
Cruise lines are not fixed to one terminal, and the same line can use different terminals on different sailings. Our guide to which Southampton cruise terminal your ship is leaving from shows how to check, using the current port schedule.
The 10 hotels in detail
Leonardo Royal Hotel Southampton Grand Harbour
On West Quay Road on the city's waterfront, this is a full-service hotel with 173 rooms, an indoor heated swimming pool, a gym, the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill and Leo's Bar. It suits passengers who want a comfortable, central base with somewhere to relax the evening before. The hotel offers complimentary luggage storage and wheelchair-accessible rooms, and on-site paid parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Its website also lists cruise packages that include parking for set numbers of days. Caveat: standard parking is not reserved, and some spa facilities have been listed as temporarily closed, so check what is open if the pool or spa is part of the appeal.
voco Southampton
On Herbert Walker Avenue, this IHG hotel describes itself as next to the cruise terminal, and it sits beside the Western Docks. Some older listings still show it as Holiday Inn Southampton. It is one of the strongest options for drivers: the hotel has an on-site outdoor car park with accessible spaces, and its Park, Stay and Cruise packages combine a night's stay and breakfast for two with eight or 15 nights of parking. There is a fitness centre and an on-site restaurant. Caveat: the listed package lengths may not match your cruise, so ask what happens if your sailing is shorter or longer, and remember the Eastern Docks terminals are across the city.
Premier Inn Southampton City Centre (West Quay)
Premier Inn describes this hotel as in the heart of the city, close to the Port of Southampton. It is the straightforward budget choice in the West Quay area, with air conditioning in all rooms, a restaurant serving breakfast and dinner, and family and accessible rooms. The shops and restaurants around WestQuay are on the doorstep. Caveat: the hotel has no car park of its own. Its website points drivers to the chargeable West Quay multi-storey car park next door, so if you want to leave a car there for your cruise, check that car park's long-stay terms yourself.
Moxy Southampton
Moxy is on Harbour Parade in the West Quay area, a Marriott brand built around compact rooms and a social bar. Bar Moxy covers drinks, food and late-night snacks, and the hotel is pet-friendly. Marriott lists limited on-site parking, with the West Quay multi-storey car park next door as the alternative. Caveat: Moxy describes its rooms as compact, which is worth weighing if you are travelling with several large cruise cases, and we found no cruise parking package on its official page.
Novotel Southampton
At 1 West Quay Road, Novotel describes itself as just steps from the train station, cruise terminals, shopping and historic attractions, which makes it a strong choice for rail arrivals. Families get free breakfast for under-16s and a kids' corner in reception, and there are accessible rooms, a restaurant, a bar and a fitness suite. The on-site car park is available for an additional charge. Caveat: the hotel notes that bedrooms do not have air conditioning, which matters on a summer sailing weekend, and we found no cruise parking package on its official page.
ibis Southampton Centre
Along the same road at 9 West Quay Road, the ibis is a short walk from Southampton Central and a sensible budget pick for a single night before sailing. Reception is open 24/7, there is a bar and restaurant, and accessible rooms are available. The hotel has paid on-site parking and advertises a Park and Cruise package that lets you leave your car in its secure car park until you return. Caveat: the package conditions are not set out on the main page, so confirm the length of stay it covers before you rely on it.
Harbour Hotel Southampton
At 5 Maritime Walk in Ocean Village, Harbour Hotel describes itself as a five-star hotel, set on the waterfront in a private marina. Facilities include the HarSPA with a heated pool, The Jetty restaurant and the HarBAR on 6th rooftop bar. Its Cruise & Stay offer includes an overnight stay, breakfast, spa access, parking for seven, 14 or 21 nights and a transfer from the hotel to the terminal. It sits on the Eastern Docks side of the city. Caveat: the offer is subject to promotional room availability and requires full payment at booking, and the hotel states that parking is at your own risk.
THE PIG-in the wall
At 8 Western Esplanade, on the edge of the Old Town, THE PIG-in the wall is a boutique hotel and the character choice in this list. Rooms range up to larger rooms with freestanding baths, and the group's guidance says you can check in from 3pm but are welcome to arrive earlier to drop off luggage. It suits couples who want somewhere memorable for a celebratory night before sailing. Caveat: the group's FAQ lists family rooms at its other hotels rather than this one, and we could not confirm parking or a cruise parking package on its official pages, so contact the hotel if you are driving.
Leonardo Hotel Southampton
On Charlotte Place overlooking East Park, this is the most family-oriented hotel in the list: Leonardo lists a dedicated family check-in desk, family rooms and a children's cinema room with complimentary snacks on set evenings. It also has a 24-hour reception, lifts, accessible rooms, a restaurant and a bar, plus free luggage storage. The hotel's website lists Cruise & Park packages of up to 21 days. Caveat: there is no on-site parking for ordinary stays, the hotel points guests to nearby public car parks, and it is a walk from Southampton Central rather than next to it.
Hilton Southampton – Utilita Bowl
At the Utilita Bowl on Botley Road, SO30 3XH, this hotel is outside the city centre, with Boundary Lakes Golf Course next door. It suits drivers who want easy on-site parking (self-parking is charged per day, and there are EV charging points) and facilities to use the evening before: a spa, a fitness centre and a restaurant. Families will find a kids' menu for under-12s, cots and connecting rooms. Caveat: spa access is for over-16s, there is no children's pool, you will need a vehicle to reach the docks, and we found no cruise parking package on its official page.
Getting from your Southampton hotel to the cruise terminal
Southampton's terminals are spread across the docks, so a hotel described as "near the port" will not be walkable to every terminal. Even when a terminal is not far away, walking along dock roads with large cruise cases is a different proposition from a stroll without luggage, and the exact route depends on your hotel and your terminal.
A pre-booked hotel to cruise terminal transfer takes that uncertainty out of embarkation morning: the driver collects you and your luggage from the hotel entrance and drops you at the correct terminal. It is worth arranging once you know your terminal and check-in window.
Arriving from Heathrow, Gatwick or Southampton Airport
If you are flying in, the usual pattern is airport, then a Southampton hotel, then the cruise terminal the next morning. It turns a long travel day into two manageable ones and leaves room for a delayed flight.
- From Heathrow, see our Heathrow to Southampton transfers.
- From Gatwick, see our Gatwick to Southampton transfers.
- From Southampton Airport, see our Southampton Airport transfers.
For the airport-to-hotel leg itself, a station pickup or other journeys from your hotel, our Southampton hotel transfers page covers the options.
One night or two before your cruise?
One night is enough for many passengers, especially those arriving by car or train from within the UK. Two nights can make sense if:
- You are flying in internationally. A spare day protects you from a delayed or cancelled flight, and ships do not wait for late passengers.
- You are dealing with jet lag. A full day to adjust makes the first days of the cruise more enjoyable.
- You want to see Southampton. An extra day leaves time for the Old Town walls, the waterfront or the city's museums.
- You want a calm embarkation day. Arriving the day before means the morning of sailing is only about the short trip to the terminal.
Two nights is a buffer, not a requirement. Our embarkation day timeline walks through how the sailing day itself usually runs.
Frequently asked questions
What is the closest hotel to Southampton cruise terminal?
There is no single Southampton cruise terminal. The port has five: Ocean and QEII Cruise Terminals in the Eastern Docks, and City, Mayflower and Horizon Cruise Terminals in the Western Docks. voco Southampton on Herbert Walker Avenue sits beside the Western Docks, while Harbour Hotel Southampton in Ocean Village is on the Eastern Docks side. Check which terminal your ship uses before deciding which hotel is closest.
Which area of Southampton is best before a cruise?
For most people the city centre around West Quay is the most practical all-round base, with shops, restaurants and the station within reach. Ocean Village suits a waterfront or premium stay, and the hotels on West Quay Road near Southampton Central suit rail arrivals. Drivers can also look slightly outside the centre.
Can I walk from my hotel to Southampton cruise terminal?
Sometimes, but it depends on the hotel and the terminal. The terminals are spread across two separate dock areas, and a hotel near one terminal can be a long way from another. With full cruise luggage, most passengers find a short vehicle transfer more practical than walking along dock roads.
Which Southampton hotels offer cruise parking?
Normal hotel parking is for overnight guests and does not automatically let you leave your car there for the whole cruise. Cruise parking needs a specific package or rate. When we checked official hotel websites in October 2026, Leonardo Royal Hotel Southampton Grand Harbour, voco Southampton, ibis Southampton Centre, Harbour Hotel Southampton and Leonardo Hotel Southampton listed cruise parking packages. Terms and durations change, so confirm directly with the hotel before booking.
Should I stay in Southampton the night before my cruise?
It is not essential, but it helps if you are flying in, travelling a long distance or worried about traffic and delays on embarkation day. Passengers who live within an easy drive often travel on the morning of the sailing instead.
