Southampton Central is close to the docks, but the five cruise terminals are spread out along the waterfront. City and Horizon are within roughly a 20-minute walk. For Queen Elizabeth II, the walk is closer to three-quarters of an hour.
That difference matters when you have cruise luggage. Start with the terminal named on your cruise documents, then decide how you want to make the last part of the journey. Our terminal guide explains which ships use which terminal.

How far is Southampton Central from each cruise terminal?
| Cruise terminal | Road distance | Drive in light traffic | Estimated walk |
|---|---|---|---|
| City | 0.8 miles | 6 minutes | 18 minutes |
| Horizon | 0.9 miles | 7 minutes | 17 minutes |
| Mayflower | 1.3 miles | 8 minutes | 28 minutes |
| Ocean | 1.7 miles | 10 minutes | 32 minutes |
| Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) | 2.3 miles | 11 minutes | 46 minutes |
Google Maps estimates from Central Station (Stop SD), checked 4 November 2026. Distances are by road. Walking estimates use pedestrian routes. Your route may differ with your station exit and port access on the day.
These are short drives when traffic is moving. In our experience, congestion around the port can roughly double them. The 10-minute trip to Ocean, for example, can become around 20 minutes.
Allow time to get off the train, meet your driver and load your cases as well as the drive itself. Work back from your cruise line's arrival or check-in time when choosing a train.
Terminals can change between sailings. Your own cruise documents are the best starting point, with current port information available from Visit Southampton.
Which side of Southampton Central should you leave from?
There are entrances on both sides of the station.
- North side — Blechynden Terrace
- South side — Western Esplanade
Both have hackney taxi ranks and pickup/drop-off areas. The convenient exit depends on your arrival platform, so the direction your train comes from should not be your only guide.
For a viaUNO pickup, tell your driver which side you are coming out of before you head to the road. We can arrange collection on either side. Agreeing that detail saves you looking for a car at the opposite entrance.
If you need step-free access, check the live lift notices on South Western Railway's station page. Station staff can help with the route from your platform.
Is the walk manageable with cruise luggage?
For City or Horizon, walking is a reasonable option if everyone in your group can comfortably manage their own bags. One suitcase that rolls easily is a different proposition from two large cases and a pushchair.
Mayflower and Ocean involve closer to half an hour on foot. Think about whether you would be happy doing that walk in the weather forecast for your arrival, with everything you are taking on the cruise. The map estimate may not reflect your pace with luggage.
QEII is the longest walk in the table. At an estimated 46 minutes, a vehicle transfer will be the more practical choice for many passengers carrying cruise cases.
If you walk, follow the current pedestrian route, port signs and staff directions. The road distances above should not be used to plan a walking route.
Taxi rank or a pre-booked transfer?
A rank taxi is an option from either station exit. Before loading your bags, tell the driver your terminal and ask about the fare. Make sure there is room for everyone and everything travelling with you.
Booking ahead lets you sort out the vehicle, price and meeting point before your train arrives. It is particularly useful for a larger group or when you have more luggage than a standard car can take.
For larger groups, our Large MPVs carry 6–8 passengers and 6–8 suitcases. We confirm the passenger and luggage combination for the vehicle assigned to your booking. An Executive MPV takes up to 6 passengers and 6 suitcases. Tell us about pushchairs and bulky items too, so we can make sure there is space.
How much does a station-to-cruise transfer cost?
As a guide, viaUNO's published starting fare for a Premium Estate/SUV cruise transfer from central Southampton is £28.50 per vehicle, at the standard midweek daytime rate.
The exact fare from Southampton Central depends on your terminal, date, pickup time and vehicle. Enter those details when requesting a quote.
You can see the current cruise transfer prices or request a station transfer quote.
Is there a bus or cruise shuttle?
For Ocean Terminal, ABP's arrival guide describes a bus connection to Town Quay followed by a walk to the terminal. This may suit travellers with light luggage. Check the current route and timetable, and include the final walk in your plans.
A cruise-line shuttle may also be an option for your sailing. Look in your joining instructions for availability, the station meeting point and whether you need to reserve a place.
Getting back to the station after your cruise
When choosing a return train, start with when you expect to be ashore with your cases. The ship's scheduled docking time is too early to count as the start of your transfer. You still need to reach the pickup area, travel to the station and get to your platform.
For a viaUNO collection, message your driver as you disembark. We arrange the meeting at the designated private hire pickup area. A name board is available on request.
We do not add waiting-time charges for Southampton cruise disembarkation delays. If you are off the ship earlier than expected, let your driver know. An earlier pickup depends on driver and vehicle availability.
Before you travel
Should I book my train to Southampton Central or Southampton Airport Parkway?
Southampton Central is the station for the journeys in this guide. Southampton Airport Parkway is a separate station and requires a different onward transfer. Make sure your rail ticket and transfer booking show the same station.
What if my train is delayed?
Contact your driver or viaUNO with the updated arrival time as soon as you can. If disruption changes your travel date or arrival station, contact viaUNO to amend the booking.
Can I leave my luggage at Southampton Central?
South Western Railway lists no luggage storage facility at the station. If you have time to explore before boarding or after your cruise, our Southampton cruise luggage storage guide explains the local options and their booking arrangements.
