About the destination
Windsor Castle (Windsor SL4 1NJ) is the world's oldest and largest inhabited castle — a royal residence for over 900 years and an official home of the King. Visit the lavish State Apartments, St George's Chapel (where royal weddings and burials take place) and, on most mornings, the Changing of the Guard. Allow 2–3 hours on site. The riverside town of Windsor, Eton across the bridge and Windsor Great Park are all within walking distance.
The journey from Southampton
Around 65 miles / 1 hour 20–1 hour 30 from central Southampton via the M3 and M25 — a straightforward motorway run. We collect from your address (hotel, home or cruise terminal) and drop you right by the castle entrance on Castle Hill in the centre of Windsor.
Southampton cruise → Windsor Castle → Heathrow
This is a journey we have run, and it books as one journey rather than two. You disembark in Southampton, your driver collects you from your terminal — we cover all five (Ocean, City, Mayflower, QEII and Horizon) — and your cases stay securely in the vehicle all day, so there is no left-luggage office to find and nothing to wheel round Windsor. You spend your time at the castle or in the town as you please, then the same driver takes you on to your booked Heathrow terminal. We provide the transport and the waiting driver; planning the visit is yours, and we are not a guided tour operator. Windsor really is close to Heathrow — roughly 6 miles to Terminal 5 and under ten to the others, so normally 15 to 25 minutes depending on terminal and traffic. How to book it
In the booking form, set your Southampton cruise terminal as the pickup, add Windsor Castle using "Add stop", and set your Heathrow terminal as the destination. That is one booking, quoted across the whole route including the detour, with your flight number attached so the driver has it. You no longer need to book two separate one-way legs. One thing to tell us though: the automatic quote is built from the driving, so if you want the driver to wait several hours while you visit rather than making a brief stop, message us with the plan before you book and we will confirm the right price for the day. We would rather agree that up front than have a driver double-booked halfway through your afternoon.
Will it fit before my flight?
Only your actual flight can answer that, and we would rather work it through with you than have you guess. The variables are real: your disembarkation time is set by the cruise line and varies by ship — self-disembarkation passengers are off early, those waiting on assisted luggage considerably later — then the drive up, however long you want at Windsor, the hop to the terminal, and your airline's own check-in and security cut-offs at the far end. A late-afternoon or evening departure usually leaves room for a proper visit; an early flight often leaves no room for one at all, and we will tell you that rather than sell you a stop that becomes a rush. Send us your ship, your vacate slot and your flight number and time, and we will say what is realistic. We cannot guarantee a flight connection on a day with sightseeing in it.
Which vehicle — luggage decides it
On a cruise day the vehicle is decided by your luggage rather than your headcount, because everything you sailed with travels with you all day. A Premium takes up to 4 passengers with up to 3 cases; the 8-seater MPV takes up to 8 passengers with up to 8 cases, which is what most cruise parties need; the Executive carries up to 4 passengers with up to 2 cases, so it suits a couple travelling light rather than a family off a two-week sailing. Tell us your case count at booking and we will send the right one.
What is included
Private hire transfer in a Premium, 8-seater MPV or Executive. Door-to-destination drop-off in central Windsor by the castle. Fuel and all road costs are included in the quote, which is fixed once you book. Castle admission is not included and is not something we sell: tickets are timed and booked directly by you through the Royal Collection Trust, and we would book them before your travel date rather than on the day.
Getting back, or going on somewhere else
Windsor does not have to be the end of the journey. If you want to come back to Southampton, or carry on to an airport or a hotel, that onward leg can be part of the same booking as a stop rather than a separate arrangement — which is usually simpler, since one driver keeps your luggage throughout. Booking a straightforward return pickup from Windsor at a set time also works if you would rather keep the two directions independent. Either way, both legs are priced and confirmed before you travel.
